Introduction
Zambia boasts a rich history in mining and metallurgy spanning centuries, characterized by indigenous communities employing traditional iron smelting methods. The modern steel industry in the country commenced its development in the mid-20th century. UNIVERSAL MINING & CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LTD is a Zambian-owned company and is a subsidiary of the TRADE KINGS GROUP.
The commissioning of UMCIL's Kafue steel plant in 2006 marked a pivotal moment, demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement through facility upgrades and targeted development initiatives. This steadfast dedication and expertise have propelled UMCIL to consistently achieve and exceed elevated standards, positioning us for ongoing success today and in the future.
The 1st Phase of the Integrated Iron and Steel plant at Kafue saw the erection of an electric arc furnace mini mill which acted as the catalyst for our remarkable trajectory. Today UMCIL houses a Direct Reduction IRON (DRI) unit, an SMS Unit, a Continuous Billet Casting Mill, a sophisticated Rolling Mill, and fully equipped Testing laboratories. A beacon of strength, resilience, and leveraging on advanced technologies, innovations, and technical capabilities.
At UMCIL we are committed to using local raw materials for its products, making us the first Zambian manufacturer to produce steel rebars using Iron Ore from our own mines. UMCIL also plays a pivotal role in contributing to economic and infrastructure development, employment generation, and providing high-quality steel products to build a stronger and better Zambia.

Our Company History
Our integrated mini steel works has been designed to produce +200,000 tonnes of steel per year. Here, we are recording the chronology our steel production since we started operation in 2008.
Launch of Steel Plant
Started operation in 2008. Trial production reached 268 tons as we navigated the challenges of being an infant industry.
Production Milestone
Annual production reaches 76,400 tons as facility stabilizes and expands market presence.
Window Section Mill
Launch of the Window Section Mill. Annual production rises to 90,650 tons.
New capability launched
DRI Launch
Official launch of Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) facility. Annual production hits 94,329 tons.
